What is Co-Ownership?

This is where more than one person is on the AKC registration as an owner. Co-Ownership is typically used when a novice is interested in purchasing a show quality puppy from a breeder.

In this instance, it allows the breeder to stipulate certain requirements be met before full ownership is released. The "co-owner" (Breeder usually) also has the right to refuse signing Litter registration papers resulting a litter being "unregisterable"

This form of ownership should be accompanied by a written contract spelling out the specific requirements. Like any legal contract, written provides the best protection of both parties. To protect yourself, whether Buyer or Seller, NEVER allow this type of ownership to be verbal regardless if it is a friend, or a trusted breeder!
